About endless-sky/endless-sky
Endless Sky is a sandbox-style space exploration game built in C++ with OpenGL, drawing inspiration from classic titles like Elite and Escape Velocity. Players start as captains of small spacecraft and can pursue various gameplay paths, including trading, completing missions, bounty hunting, exploration, or engaging in a major story campaign involving civil wars and first contact with alien civilizations. The game emphasizes player freedom, allowing earned credits to be invested in better ships or upgraded weapons and engines.
The project is designed with minimal system requirements, supporting devices with as little as 750 MB of RAM and OpenGL 2.0 graphics, making it accessible across Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms including very old systems like Windows XP. The game is freely available through multiple distribution channels including GitHub releases, Steam, GOG, and Flathub, and is released under the GPL v3 license with artwork under public domain or Creative Commons licenses.
Development is community-driven with an active contributor base. The project uses CMake for building and welcomes contributions of artwork, storylines, and code, with community discussion organized through Discord, Steam discussions, and GitHub. The codebase and extensive wiki provide resources for modders and contributors looking to extend the game's content.
