About openwrt/openwrt
OpenWrt is a Linux-based operating system designed for embedded devices like routers and wireless access points. Rather than providing a static, vendor-locked firmware, OpenWrt offers a fully writable filesystem with a package manager that lets users and developers customize devices for their specific needs. This approach breaks away from manufacturer-imposed limitations and enables repurposing hardware in ways the original vendor never intended.
The project serves as both a complete firmware distribution and a development framework. Users can download pre-built firmware images for supported architectures through the OpenWrt Firmware Selector, while developers can build custom firmware by selecting specific packages and configurations through a menuconfig interface. The build system handles downloading sources, creating cross-compilation toolchains, and compiling the Linux kernel and applications for the target device.
OpenWrt maintains a modular architecture supported by multiple related repositories covering the LuCI web interface for device management, community-contributed packages, mesh routing solutions, and multimedia packages. The project has an active community providing extensive documentation, forums, chat channels, and bug tracking systems. Written primarily in C, OpenWrt requires a case-sensitive filesystem to compile and is supported on Linux, BSD, and macOS systems.
