About utox/utox
µTox is a lightweight client for the Tox protocol, a peer-to-peer instant messaging system built on end-to-end encryption. Written in C, the application prioritizes minimal resource consumption while maintaining broad platform support, with primary releases for Windows 7 and later and Linux, secondary support for various BSD variants, and an unmaintained macOS version. The client includes a complete user interface with themed customization options and support for multiple languages including German, Russian, Swedish, Polish, Spanish, Hungarian, Estonian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian.
The application provides a comprehensive set of messaging features including text chat with history, audio and video calling via webcam or desktop sharing, file transfers with inline image support, group text chats, and screenshot functionality. Users can customize their experience with avatars and themes, and the client supports Tox URI links for easy connection establishment. Like the underlying Toxcore protocol it implements, µTox is designated as alpha software and invites community contributions to address bugs and missing features.
The project maintains an active development team coordinated through GitHub and IRC, with builds and releases available directly from the project's release page. While an Android version exists, the developers recommend using the alternative aTox client for mobile devices instead.
