About zusam/zusam
Zusam is a self-hosted private social platform designed for groups of friends and family to share messages, photos, videos, and links in a secure, private environment. Built with a PHP backend powered by Symfony and SQLite, paired with a lightweight frontend written in Preact, it provides a stable and extensible alternative to centralized social media for managing closed communities.
The platform includes features like link previews with embedded content from popular services (YouTube, Vimeo, Imgur, Soundcloud, Twitch, Bandcamp), video and image uploads with photo album organization, public link generation for sharing specific messages, and a fully responsive mobile-friendly interface. The server footprint is kept intentionally low to make self-hosting accessible, and the project supports multiple deployment options including Docker, nginx, and Apache on Debian systems.
Currently approaching version 1.0, Zusam is stable enough for daily use but is still evolving with potential breaking changes. The project requires PHP 8.3 or newer with specific extensions and FFmpeg 3 or higher, and is licensed under AGPLv3. The webapp is optimized for Firefox ESR and recent Chrome versions, with community contributions supported through the Weblate translation platform.
