About LeagueSandbox/GameServer

League Sandbox Game Server was a project aimed at creating a private server implementation for League of Legends, the popular MOBA developed by Riot Games. Built in C#, the project served as a game server backend that allowed developers and enthusiasts to experiment with game mechanics and server-side functionality outside of Riot's official infrastructure.

The project was community-driven and received contributions from multiple developers over several years, becoming notable in the modding and reverse-engineering community for its technical approach to understanding and reimplementing League of Legends server architecture. It attracted interest from those interested in game development, private servers, and the broader sandbox gaming ecosystem.

In August 2022, the project's original maintainer received a cease-and-desist letter from Riot Games regarding copyright concerns. Rather than pursue legal action, the maintainer decided to archive the repository, closing it to further contributions while preserving the work already completed by contributors. This decision was made in respect of Riot's intellectual property rights while acknowledging the importance of open-source collaboration and allowing past contributors to retain their work in their portfolios.
