Artemis is an interactive learning platform developed at TU Munich that delivers automated feedback to students on various types of exercises. Built with Java and Spring Boot on the backend paired with an Angular frontend, it serves as a comprehensive educational technology system designed to support both instructors and students in creating and completing coursework at scale.
The platform supports multiple exercise types including programming exercises with automatic testing and code analysis, quizzes with various question formats, modeling exercises using UML diagrams through the Apollon editor, text exercises with natural language processing feedback, and file upload exercises. Programming exercises are particularly sophisticated, allowing instructors to customize feedback for any programming language, supporting both local IDE development and an integrated online editor, with student submissions evaluated in isolated Docker environments. The system integrates continuous integration and version control seamlessly, eliminating the need for external tool configuration. Additional features include exam mode for online proctored testing, competency-based learning paths through the Atlas system, communication tools, lecture management, tutorial group organization, and plagiarism detection using JPlag.
Artemis emphasizes scalability, user experience, and constructive alignment between learning goals and assessments. The platform integrates AI-powered tools from the EduTelligence suite, including Iris for intelligent tutoring assistance and Athena for semi-automatic assessment using machine learning. It has proven capable of supporting courses with thousands of simultaneous users and is actively maintained by a dedicated team at TU Munich with clear feature ownership across multiple maintainers. The project is open-source and welcomes community contributions following professional standards around identity verification and contribution guidelines.
