About riatelab/cartography

Cartography is an R package designed for creating thematic maps and cartographic visualizations. It provides tools for producing various types of maps including proportional symbol maps, choropleth maps, typology maps, flow maps, and discontinuity maps, enabling users to integrate sophisticated geographic representations into their R workflows.

The package is now in maintenance mode with no plans for new features or enhancements, though basic support will continue indefinitely. The developers have created a successor package called mapsf, which they recommend for new projects as it offers improved user-friendliness, lighter weight, and greater robustness. Existing projects using cartography can safely continue with the current package or migrate to mapsf.

The cartography package competes with other R mapping solutions like tmap and ggplot2 combined with ggspatial. It was published in the Journal of Open Source Software and has been cited in academic literature on reproducible cartography and GIScience.
