About votingworks/vxsuite

VxSuite is the core software system behind VotingWorks' paper-ballot voting infrastructure. The project is a comprehensive TypeScript and Rust-based application suite designed to support election administration across multiple stages of the voting process, from ballot design and marking through scanning and tabulation.

The system is organized into several specialized applications serving different roles in the voting workflow. VxAdmin and VxCentralScan handle central election management and batch processing of absentee ballots respectively. VxMark and VxMarkScan are ballot-marking devices that allow voters to mark their choices, with VxMarkScan including support for limited-dexterity casting. VxScan operates as a precinct-level scanner for accepting marked ballots, while VxPollBook serves as an electronic poll book for voter check-in. VxDesign and VxPrint handle ballot design and printing tasks. The system architecture divides into central systems (VxAdmin and VxCentralScan) and precinct systems (VxMark, VxMarkScan, and VxScan).

The project is maintained by VotingWorks and is distributed under GNU GPL v3.0. Development is active with documented contribution guidelines, and the system represents a significant infrastructure project for supporting verified paper-ballot voting workflows in election administration.
