About for-the-zero/fork--NEKO
N.E.K.O. is an open-source AI companion platform designed as a digital life form that understands emotions, builds connections, and grows alongside users. The project stands apart from task automation tools and roleplay chatbots by emphasizing persistent relationships, native integration of multiple interaction modalities, and local-first data privacy. It combines real-time voice and text conversation with visual perception, motion-captured avatars in multiple formats (Live2D, VRM, MMD, PNGTuber), and a five-dimensional memory system that tracks working memory, recent interactions, factual knowledge, reflections, and personality traits.
The platform ships as a zero-configuration application available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam, with mobile versions currently in beta testing. It features proactive companionship capabilities where the AI initiates conversations based on screen understanding and social media trends, computer control and browser automation through Agent tools, and a plugin ecosystem for extending functionality into gaming companionship, social media interaction, smart home control, and other scenarios. The system supports over 14 AI service providers including OpenAI, Gemini, Qwen, and DeepSeek, with free models available out of the box.
Core technical components include a five-dimensional memory system, real-time API clients for instant voice interaction alongside text-based completions, desktop pet modes, and cross-device synchronization so the same AI companion maintains consistent memory and personality across desktop, mobile, games, and smart hardware. The project is Apache 2.0 licensed with core functionality running locally, includes Docker deployment support, and maintains an active development roadmap with planned features including a native AI game title called K.U.R.O., autonomous cat-girl social networks, and Steam Workshop integration for user-created characters and voice packs. Telemetry is opt-out and explicitly excludes conversation content while providing transparency through detailed documentation of what data is collected.
