About airsonic/airsonic

Airsonic is a free, web-based media server that allows users to stream their music and video collections over the internet. It provides ubiquitous access to personal media libraries, enabling users to listen to their own music while away from home or share content with friends across multiple simultaneous streams to different devices. The platform is optimized for large music collections spanning hundreds of gigabytes and supports streaming to various audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and through transcoder plugins, formats like FLAC, WMA, APE, and others.

The project originated as a community fork of Subsonic, a closed-source media server, and represents an effort to maintain a stable, free, and open-source alternative. Built on Java technology, Airsonic runs across Windows, Mac, Linux, and Unix systems. Beyond streaming capabilities, it functions as a local jukebox with an intuitive web interface optimized for browsing large media libraries, includes podcast receiver functionality, supports bitrate limiting for bandwidth-constrained connections with automatic resampling, and integrates DLNA support for compatibility with various media players.

Note that while Airsonic is no longer actively maintained, the project has been succeeded by Airsonic Advanced, which continues development with community contributions. The original codebase is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3 and is free of licensing restrictions.
