About pcsx2/pcsx2
PCSX2 is a free and open-source emulator for the PlayStation 2 console, written in C++. The project emulates PS2 hardware using a combination of MIPS CPU interpreters, dynamic recompilers, and a virtual machine that manages hardware states and system memory, allowing users to play PS2 games on their computers with additional features beyond the original console experience.
The project has been under active development for over twenty years, evolving from supporting only a few public domain demos to running most commercial games at full speed, including major titles like Final Fantasy X and Devil May Cry 3. The team maintains a compatibility database with test results for more than 2500 titles to help users determine which games will run properly.
PCSX2 runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms and requires a BIOS dump extracted from a legitimate PS2 console to function. The project accepts community contributions and translation work through Crowdin, with stable and nightly builds available through their official website.
