Ascendance is a 2D boss rush game developed in Unity as a first-year student project at ESGI. Set in ancient Egypt, the game follows the soul of a fallen soldier tasked with ascending a pyramid by defeating increasingly challenging bosses, each with unique mechanics. The narrative frames the ascent as a trial of the heart, with the story progression tied directly to the player's advancement through the pyramid's floors.
The gameplay emphasizes combat built around jumping and dodging mechanics, requiring players to master movement-based defense and positioning rather than traditional attack buttons. Each boss encounter presents distinct mechanics that force the player to adapt their strategy, creating varied challenges across multiple floors. The game was created collaboratively by Alexandre Vanneuville, Sonny Naidja, and Raphaël Bedleem, with sprite and texture work done in Aseprite to establish a cohesive visual style befitting the ancient Egyptian setting.
