About spree/spree
Spree is an open-source headless eCommerce platform built in Ruby that enables merchants to launch cross-border storefronts, B2B wholesale operations, and custom commerce backends. It provides a production-grade REST API with a TypeScript SDK, a ready-to-deploy Next.js storefront built with React 19 and Tailwind CSS 4, and a comprehensive admin dashboard. The platform is released under the BSD 3-Clause license, allowing users to maintain full ownership of their code, data, and infrastructure without platform or transaction fees.
The platform ships with extensive eCommerce capabilities including multi-store support, cross-border markets with localized currencies and payment methods, B2B pricing through price lists and customer groups, advanced promotions and gift cards, digital products, and integrated payment processing via Stripe, Adyen, and PayPal. Additional features include MeiliSearch integration for typo-tolerant product search, EU Omnibus Directive compliance with price history tracking, bulk product operations, CSV import/export, and native integrations with Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Klaviyo.
Spree is designed for extensibility through an event bus, webhooks, and a role-based permissions system in the admin interface. While the core open-source version covers essential commerce features, an Enterprise Edition is available for organizations requiring multi-vendor marketplace capabilities, B2B approval workflows, ERP integrations, multi-tenant SaaS architecture, and dedicated support. The project is maintained by a funded team and welcomes community contributions through its active Discord community and GitHub repository.
