Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a turn-based survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world where players must scavenge, build, and fight to stay alive. While often described as a zombie game, the project offers a much broader experience featuring procedurally generated worlds, diverse enemy types ranging from giant insects to killer robots, and complex survival mechanics. Players can search for supplies, vehicles, and equipment while competing with other survivors who may pose a threat.
The project is written in C++ and features both text-based and graphical tile versions, with packages available for major Linux distributions as well as Windows and macOS through various build systems. The game is highly moddable and community-driven, developed under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 3.0 license by over one thousand contributors. The extensive documentation includes in-game help systems, tutorials, and comprehensive compilation guides for different platforms and build tools.
The community is active across multiple platforms including a dedicated forum, GitHub repository, IRC channel, and Discord server, where players and developers discuss features, report bugs, and contribute improvements.
