About dskvr/Sonarr

Sonarr is a personal video recorder application designed for users who download television shows via Usenet newsgroups and BitTorrent. The software automates the entire workflow of finding, downloading, organizing, and managing TV episodes by monitoring RSS feeds for new releases of shows you're interested in. Once episodes are found, Sonarr automatically downloads them, renames files according to your preferences, and organizes them into your media library.

Beyond basic downloading, Sonarr offers sophisticated quality management features that allow it to automatically upgrade previously downloaded episodes when better quality versions become available, such as upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray releases. The application includes intelligent error handling that attempts alternative releases if a download fails, and provides manual search functionality so users can override automatic choices or understand why certain releases weren't selected. It integrates deeply with popular media ecosystem tools like SABnzbd and NZBGet for download management, and with media servers and home theater software like Kodi and Plex for library management and notifications.

The project is built with C# for the backend and modern web technologies for the frontend, running on Windows, Linux, macOS, and even Raspberry Pi devices. Development is streamlined through Visual Studio and Node.js tooling, with the codebase split between backend logic and a UI layer that can be developed independently. The project is open source under the GNU GPL v3 license and has been actively maintained since 2010.
