dhewm 3 is a cross-platform source port of the original Doom 3 game engine released under the GPL. It uses SDL for low-level operating system support and is known to run on Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The project aims to bring Doom 3 to modern systems and architectures while preserving the original gameplay experience, fixing bugs as they are identified without altering how the game plays.

The port includes several technical improvements over the original release, including a 64-bit architecture port, OpenAL for audio with support for EAX reverb effects on all platforms, OpenGL rendering, gamepad support, better widescreen and arbitrary resolution handling, and a CMake-based build system that supports cross-compilation. An advanced settings menu accessible by pressing F10 provides configuration options independent of individual mods. The project also restored the "depth fail" method for rendering stencil shadows after the relevant patent expired.

Compiling dhewm 3 requires OpenAL Soft, SDL 1.2 or 2.0, and optionally libcurl for server downloads. The project is actively maintained with contributions welcome, though the developers explicitly reject code generated with AI assistance tools. Game data must be obtained separately, as the GPL release does not include any original game content, and players must patch their copies to version 1.3.1 to play.
